Latvian–Lithuanian wetlands
In the Daugava river catchment basin from Daugavpils (Latvia) to the city of Zarasai (Lithuania), a special natural territory (habitat) has formed. It is home to many protected animal species. This territory is special because the fragile ecosystem overlaps with human-populated areas. Therefore, it is especially important to find a compromise where humans can enjoy nature, but nature can regenerate and develop undisturbed because people together ensure its protection.
The Latvian–Lithuanian wetlands differ significantly from other similar regions in the countries, as they have an especially large number of lakes (more than 800) and rivers (more than 5,000). These wetlands are important centers of European biodiversity, providing habitat for more than 400 rare hydrophilic species (plant and animal species adapted for living and developing in conditions of particularly high moisture).
The total area of the wetlands is measured in tens of thousands of hectares. It is a huge territory, for the recovery and preservation of which maximum involvement of local residents and tourists is necessary. By preserving urban wetlands, we promote high biodiversity, mitigate the impact of climate change, and help clean the habitat from unnecessary pollution. As a result, the natural territory serves for positive emotions and educational visits.
