The urban wetlands of the Latvian and Lithuanian cross-border region, including the surroundings of the Ruģeļi reservoir in Daugavpils and the Great Island (Didžioji sala) in Zarasai, are unique and important natural territories. These wetlands located in both countries are united by a 12-kilometer-long waterway in the Daugava river basin. The territories provide a home for more than 400 rare species, including 16 species of amphibians and reptiles.

Approximately 100,000 people live in this territory, and it is visited by about 20,000 tourists every year. This is a large number. We believe that together we can keep this wetland territory clean, beautiful, and suitable for the well-being of its natural inhabitants.
