We are truly pleased that within the framework of the implemented projects we have been able to:

• recover the nature of the territories adjacent to the Daugava River on the Latvian side,
• preserve and restore habitats throughout the wetland territory,
• implement nature-based, sustainable solutions for the control / reduction of invasive species.

The process of researching, preserving, and restoring urban wetlands is an excellent environment for cross-border cooperation between Latvian and Lithuanian field experts. Already, more than 30,000 ha of area is being restored, the spread of invasive red-eared terrestrial turtles (Trachemys scripta) is being managed, and 10 protected European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis) will be released into the wild.

On the Didžioji Island in the city of Zarasai, 9.82 ha of wetland ecosystem is being restored, as well as the landscape and visitor infrastructure are being improved. The involved experts conduct research, territory restoration activities, and develop long-term nature conservation guidelines that will serve as an example for scientifically based environmental management. One in which not only paid municipal employees are involved, but every resident and visitor of the territory.
